Arizona Bus Accident Evidence Checklist
Bus accident claims can involve more than one driver and more than one insurance company. A passenger may not know who caused the crash. A pedestrian or cyclist may be dealing with a bus operator, a private shuttle company, a school bus contractor, or a public entity. The early job is to preserve the facts before the story gets flattened into a short police report.
This checklist is for Arizona bus crash victims and families. It is not legal advice, and it does not replace a case review.
Evidence to save after an Arizona bus crash
- Bus route, bus number, company or agency name, stop location, direction of travel, and time of crash.
- Photos or videos of the bus, other vehicles, intersection, crosswalk, traffic signals, skid marks, debris, weather, and visible injuries.
- Witness names and phone numbers, including passengers who left before police finished the report.
- Police report number, responding agency, ambulance records, emergency room records, and follow-up medical instructions.
- Any letters, calls, claim forms, or recorded-statement requests from the bus company, public agency, or insurer.
Why bus claims can be harder than normal car accident claims
A bus crash may involve a private company, school contractor, rideshare shuttle, public transit agency, maintenance contractor, or another driver. If a government entity is involved, Arizona deadlines can be shorter than the normal personal injury lawsuit deadline. For many injury cases, ARS 12-542 sets a two-year deadline. Claims against a public entity can also trigger the notice requirement in ARS 12-821.01.
Do not wait for the bus company or insurer to decide what evidence matters. Ask about preservation before video, route data, maintenance records, or witness details become harder to get.
FAQs
What should I do after a bus accident in Arizona?
Get medical care, report the crash, save the bus route and bus number, take photos, get witness names, and avoid signing a release before you understand the injuries and insurance issues.
Can a bus accident claim have a shorter deadline?
Yes. If a public entity or public employee is involved, Arizona’s notice-of-claim rules can apply. That deadline can arrive before the normal lawsuit deadline.
