What is uninsured and underinsured coverage and do you really need it?
Arizona’s Minimum Policy for Bodily Injury
Everyone is required to have the state’s minimum policy of bodily injury coverage in Arizona. Generally, that’s $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. So, what if this person that hit you doesn’t have any of that coverage? What are you going to do? Are you going to sue them?
Well, if this person doesn’t have the state minimum policy, what kind of additional assets may they have? More than likely, probably not much at all. So, this is where you need to protect yourselves. And you can do so by having uninsured motorist coverage. So, if you’re in an accident, or you’re hit by somebody without any coverage, this coverage will step in to compensate you and protect you for the pain and suffering, the injuries, or the loss of wages that you may experience.
What is underinsured coverage?
So, what is underinsured coverage? Everybody is required to have the state minimum policy coverage, which is generally $25,000. But if you have to go to the emergency room, that $25,000 may be used right up. Now if you have lingering issues or if you’ve lost wages from missed work, your case is going to be well worth the state minimum. So, how do you protect yourself? Well, again, we can sue that individual. But if they just have the state minimum, they more likely don’t have additional assets. So, you can protect yourself by having underinsured coverage. If your case is worth more than what the at fault party has, your insurance will kick in to make up the difference. So do I really need this coverage? When it comes to other drivers, you never know who you’re dealing with. But you can always know what kind of coverage you have. Other drivers on the road, they’re not going to be too concerned about you if an accident happens. But you can always protect yourself and make sure that you’re taken care of by having uninsured and underinsured coverage. You don’t want to leave yourself unprotected.
